My name is Mauro Bagnato and for over 15 years I have been leading tech organizations.
When I first stepped into leadership, I believed technical expertise was the key to being an effective leader. However, I quickly learned that organizations are living and complex systems and that leading them demands much more than just technical know-how.Ā I believe that curiosity is at the heart of effective leadership. This is what fuels learning and experimentation, both crucial for continuous improvement. This blog aims to explore engineering leadership in all its aspects and to provide insights in a tangible and pragmatic manner. It will also be a space where I will share insights, reflections, and personal takeaways from books, podcasts, and articles that influenced and keep influencing my journey.
In my latest post, I shared WHY delegation is so crucial.
Iām going to focus now WHAT to delegate.
One of my favorite operating principles always helps me make this decision:
š Delegate the problem, not the solution. š
Trust me, it is not just semantics.
Delegating the solution means asking someone to DO something, delegating the problem means asking someone to SOLVE something.
This subtle difference has a significant impact on how your team approaches the task.
By delegating the entire problem space, you:
1. create bigger learning opportunities
2. foster a higher sense of ownership and engagement
3. boost creativity and innovation
Of course, proper mentoring and coaching are essential to succeed, but that's a topic for my next post!
